DEPOSITION ON "tela genova" (16th C.) CITY MUSEUM OF GENOA

When thinking about the city of Genoa, has anyone ever paused to consider the important role it had played in the development of modern clothing? A few perhaps. While at the end of the 15th century, Cristoforo Colombo began his adventure to discover new worlds, also in Genoa it was arising the history of the garment which has shaped the evolution of fashion: "tela genova".

PASSION OF CHRIST - PAINTING ON TELA GENOVA, 16th C.

The birthright for the production of blue jeans can be historically traced back to the city of Genoa and surrounding area, due to the great textile tradition that has, since ancient times, been an important Ligurian exportation.

ORIGINAL G. GARIBALDI’S JEANS - CENTRAL MUSEUM OF THE RISORGIMENTO

The most widespread use was that by the sailors of the port of Genoa. It is a historical fact that Giuseppe Garibaldi (who himself had been a sailor for many years), as well as many of his partisans, was wearing jeans during his landing at Marsala. This pair of jeans is now preserved in Rome at the Central Museum of the Risorgimento inside the Altare della Patria, as the "oldest pair of jeans in the world".
